It's almost a slang word. Just one of those words that is used, but the proper definition is different. Other examples: Gay, bitch. and more...
I call the cutout stuff renders but I use the word cut when I want someone to cut out an image for me.
I agree with you, but at this point does it even matter? As long as we are all on the same page about what a render is, I don't see a problem.
