if you are satisfied with a 2.6-2.8Ghz overclock a stock coler will likely get you by, if it doesn't you can always buy a bigtyphoon or water later(that scyth fan won't do ----, the stock fans on the 165s are quite good)

a 250GB cavier will likel suffice as well

you might want to go AM2 though.... we'll see how that pans out though, performance wise AM2 offers a 1-15% performance increase(average around 5%) per clock due to increased memory speeds, doubt they would have a single socket opteron though, so if you OC it's a bit of a toss up...

also, Intels Core2 Duos are to be out soon, those are quite good, performance wise a 2.4Ghz Core duo for $315 should eb on par with my opteron at 2.6 if the reviews are right.

If you want to stay around the same price range on the processor, I'd go for the Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4 Ghz (Conroe for those of you who dont)

yep if your going to buy it in the coming months you would be better suited to a conroe.

Yep, exacly what I'm also going to do, and if you buy it later, you'd better post a new thread, or bump this one since there are always coming new parts, but for now it's a nice PC.

can anyone basically wrap all that up in laymen's terms?

when do the new core duos come out? and what is an AM2?

both are to be out wihtin a month if i am not mistaken

essentially the Core2 duos(aka conroe) claim to raise the performance of the Core1Duos by 20% per clock... considering the Core1s were on part with AMDs s939 Athlons per clock(albiet a little behind) this is complete domination, a 2Ghz Core Duo compaeable to an x2 4800+ in performance for a SMALL fraction the cost is just phenominal and when you toss in the OCing factor... AMD can't compete at the given time and won't be able to until it launches K8L(at which point they win, but thats not for a relatively LONG time)

AM2 is AMDs new socket which is more or less used for DDR2 support, it is said to raise clock speed efficiency by up to 5-15% don't count on a huge diference, cost performance AMD looses there(unless you absolutely can't wait until conroe but...)

EDIT: AM2 is supposed to be out really soon but...

    http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=75545&hl=

it's questionable as to whether the prooper memory support is currently out yet... not that running on a divider matters much but..

on another note, if i basically get this system plus a conroe, minus the opteron, what cooling should i get? money's also starting to become a problem as the system keeps getting more expensive  any money cuts would be great too

oh and the opteron is dual core...

You need to research your stuff a little also, not just leaving it up to us to tell you. The Core Duo (Intel's first generation processor of the 'Core' linup) is dual-core... which is where they get the 'Duo' in 'Core Duo'. The Conroe and Merom (Intel's newest processor that are expected in July and Augeset -- respectivly--) have been renamed Core 2 Duo... following the Pentium's succession order (pentium -> pentium pro -> p2 -> p3 etc w/e).

So the Conroe and Merom (herein referred to as Core 2 Duo) extra Letter/Number naming scheme is based 'Watts Wise'. The 'E' in 'Core 2 Duo E6800' represents a processor that uses 55 -> 75 watts of power... Generally a good number for desktops. The 'E' series of the Core 2 Duo's is in essance the Conroe. The other half of the Core 2 Duo's will be something like:
Core 2 Duo T5400. The 'T' represents a processor that uses between 25 -> 50 watts... Generally great to good for a mobile processor. The 'T' line of Core 2 Duo's is in essance the 'Merom'. The numbers following the 'E' and 'T' just resemble the faster it is.

To get a processor that is easily comparable and better then the Opteron would be the Core 2 Duo E6600... which would probably rape the Opteron 165 AND is only going to be around $315 at launch.

So don't worry about the processor jacking up the price on your system, it wont by much. I'm not sure about the motherboard pricing's because they will be brand new if/when you get one and that might make the price a bit higher. But you won't be paying much more for the Intel system compared to the Opteron system.

don't bother with anything above stock cooling, most likely with the low TDPs of conroe, you'll be more than fine, if not we'll help you pickup an aftermarket cooler if absolutely needed.

as for whether or not the opteron is dual core... all 65+ opterons are, all opterons below 65 are single core...

    144 - 1.8Ghz single core
    146 - 2.0Ghz single core
    ...
    156- 3.0Ghz single core

    then
    165 1.8Ghz dual
    170 2.0Ghz dual
    175 2.2Ghz dual
    ...
    1852.8Ghz Dual

don't even bother with the E6600 get the 6400 or 6300 and OC the diference... better bang/$

get an x1800XT insteed of the 7900GT...

also if you look his original budet was around 750... getting a core2 duo is allready pushing him slightly above that and a 7600 is fine
