tuesday i come home home from school and i walk into my room and all i smell is burnt plastic and my computers off to i look inside my computer and a wire connecting to my motherboard is melted off.

anyone know what might of caused this?

and would the fact that my computer has been on for months at a time have anything to do with it?

It's over heating, it's a pretty obvious reason.

Generally when a computer gets too hot it shuts down (that's why your computer was off, not because the cable melted). The computer generally shuts down before any damage is done to enternal parts. 10 years ago we weren't so lucky.

The fact that computer has been on for 'months' is doubtful, unless you have the most stable computer in the world. Computers AUTOMATICALLY will restart after x ammount of time. Be it due to updates or faulty code tripping a restart sequence, it will just restart. It's computer nature.

Just buy a new cable and pop it in, it will be about 10 dollars, and a bit of elbow grease.

I doubt it's overheating.. overheating of the processor would be the big issue. But what i do doubt... is the ability for a wire to take the intense heat of the Heatsink. That's what probably happened to it; it was resting on your heatsink all the months that it was on, and as we all know, the heatsink can get very hot.

What wire was it? One of the 4 pin power connector wires?

Are you sure that it wasn't like a lightning strike or something that fried it? Lol.

That is quite a stupid thing to do, leaving your computer on for months at a time.. With a stable computer that can stay on that long, it would probably be fast to boot up.. so why not just shut it down.

Go out to your local computer shop and get the wire that fried and replace it lol. And maybe get another fan if it seems hot on the inside.

Canada, many of us leave our computers on 24/7/365... and most computers these days can do that peacefully...

John, exactly what I meant, it did, infact, in some way, burn due to extensive heat somewhere within the computer.

    Please don't ever talk again.

The heatsink is what overheats, noob. If the heatsink gets too hot, the computer shuts down. Thus causing the 'shutdown' of his computer most likely.

What the hell are you talking about dumbass? It's the processor that overheats, then the computer shuts down. It doesn't matter what temperature the heatsink is, as long as the processor is at a reasonable temperature.

You stupid scrub, go learn something then talk.

My God people. This was more than likely caused by faulty wiring. That or a short. It is easy to replace wires normaly.

    1. If lightning hit it hard enough to melt a wire there would be A LOT more damage.

    2. If your Processor is getting hot enough to melt wires that are heat resistant to start with, you would have already blown it up and you also have problems.

    3. If you think leaving your computer on is bad for it you are wrong, and if, like I said, it gets hot enough to melt wires, you got issues.

    ANYWAYS:

The moral of this story is "Think" before you reply... all your cables in your case are heat treated and tested. So, I doubt that is it. Also, like I said, if your processor is that hot you got problems and so does your computer... just forget it, it was more than likely a faulty wiring job or a short.

Also, to make this version more believable... lets add. That when the extra shock of the Short in the wire caused the computer to surge protect itself and go into shutdown IMEDIATELY.

also try what I'm going to do with my laptop, tell them that it is a fire hazard, I'm sure you could go to court idk, cause if their product is a fire hazard, you might get a refund if you use those words

you could simply get a barebone, and transfer your drives and whatnot onto it...
