I don't exactly know what you mean (havent watched the tut) But the way i put alot of layers into one...is this: At the Top of C4D, click create then null object, drag all the layers into the null object. Then you can just copy paste the null object. I think the way you merge is by using some nurb, but not sure, just try the null object and see if it gives the same result .
