Okay, I finally got my parrents to buy me a new computer.
I have a budget of about €3000. If I can do something to drasticly improve the performance I can add in a few hundred.

    What I certainly want:
-An Intel c2d qx6700 EXTREME edtion (that's the full name I think)
-A Geforce 8800GTX (I'd like the brand with the cheapest one, I don't need no games and fancy extras)
-2 gigs of ram (any kind, the best ones you can think of)
    -250-300GB HD
    -----------

I don't know s*** about compatability so the mainboard and stuff is up to you guys.

    Thx in advance ;)

EDIT: I'll keep my current screen, mouse, speakers and I'll trust the guys from the store with the case so don't worry bout that.

I don't know if I can link out to other sites, but I have been browsing the PC specs proposed section of this site's forum:
    http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/
Why the 8800? Are you going to use dx10? If you're not going to play games, then why are you going for that quad core? A cheaper quad core is coming out quite soon.
I really don't have to much clue, ask at that site or something.

You could use SLi then. I really am clueless. Are you getting Vista and all that stuff? Apparently, it would be better to go for even more than 2GB, as it is meant to be like the performance minimum. What sites do you want to order off? English? American?

If he's buying a €3000 pc and he's playing games on it he's most likely gonna get vista and dx10 eventually...

Vista isn't compitable with all games though, like Steam all games on steam wont work with Vista...but a 3000 pc is good.

If you spend 3000 pounds on a computer... my god, you must be dumb. There is no point in spending that much money on a computer, you will never use that much computing power.

Do not get the quad core, it is a waste of money. Period. An E'6700 would be ABSOLUTELY fine. If need be, you can overclock it to around 4Ghz (on air, more on water, but you don't need water either.)

    I'd suggest these parts:
    Core 2 Duo E'6700

    Asus P5W Deluxe (Model: P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP <GREEN> )

    Team Xtreme 2x 1GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-10 (Model# TXDD2048M800HC4DC)

Cheapest 8800GTX (or be smart, buy something like a 7600GT now, and get an ATi R600 card when they are released.)

1x/2x Seagate Barracuda 320GB; you can set in RAID 0 if you want.

I find NEC Optical drives to be very reliant, so I'd suggest something from NEC.

Thermaltake Armour Series Case (Model VA8000BWS)

Enermax Galaxy 800W power supply (or a different/cheaper psu from this list (in tier 1, or tier Z (maybe tier 2)!!): http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=108088

I'll estimate this in USD... so..

    E'6700: $500
    Mobo: $225
    RAM: $300
    GFX: $550
    Hard Drive(s): 1x: $90 2x: $180
    Optical: $30
    Case: $140
Powersupply: ranging from $80 to $300ish

In USD that is AROUND $2095 (remember, pounds are worth more then USD.)

That will last you just as long, and be VERY good.

Oh yeah, I forgot, look for a Scythe Infinity, Scythe Ninja, or a Tuniq Tower heatsink. That would add on another.. $40-$50.

    try something like this

    dual 8800GTS $800
    q6600 $550
    ASUS striker $300
    PC&P 1KW PSU $350ish
    2GB RAM $250
    dual 150GB Raptors $400
Thermaltake armor, or coolermaster stacker case 100-150
    Tuniq tower 40-55

trust me when I say that two 8800GTSs will assrape a single 8800GTX. Atleast in the long run when the drivers mature a bit. I'd avise you to only buy a single 8800GTS for now, and see if it's enough for you(it probably will be) then get the second later when it's cheaper and you can actually make use of it(contrary to popular beleif, if you're getting 300FPS it's not really any better than 150 - most monitors only support a refresh rate of 70 or 100Hz[which is 70-100FPS])

Also, if you're going for an 88 series card, you'll want a high resolution monitor t take advantage of it. 1280*1024 is completely maxed out with cards like an x1950pro or even a 7600GT.

Also, the q6600 is half the price of the 6700. Set the FSB in BIOS to 333 and you've got 3GHz out of it, a full 333mhz faster than the q6700 at stock.

    i'd avise NOT getting a blu-ray drive

there's nothing out for it and as is, blu-ray drives and HD-DVD drives are slower the the old DVD drives and way mroe expensive.

give them a year to get faster, also wait a year for combo blu-ray/HDDVD drives.

I wanted to fill his budget... they really are a waste of money though. Buy a PS3 instead.

You'd probably be better of spending €2000 now and upgrading in a few years time, unless you're some sort of hardcore overclocking enthusiast.
