Whats the computer going to be for? Gaming? Video editing? Graphics? General use?
    Whats your budget?

    CPU Type
    Gaming - Get Intel
    Graphics - Athlon/AMD
General use - Little difference, probably Intel
Video editing - Get a Mac

I use an Intel P4e (Prescott LGA755) - its their new architecture (sp?), 755 pin version.

Any motherboards by Gigabyte or Asus will be reputable enough while still quite affordable. Aslong as its for the make / model of your CPU its all good.

Graphics card - Up to how demanding you are. I recommend ATI, get a good one. However... dont spend loads on a good gfx card if your screen isnt great, if you follow... Preferably AGPx8 rather than PCI or PCI express, its just nicer and keeps your PCI slots free for other things.

Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar range are very good, if your motherboard supports it then get the SATA version of the hard drive, its faster. I use the old IDE ones and its still great. Never skimp on hdd space, you'll just buy another one :)

RAM - Again, this all depends on your motherboard. 512mb is typical these days, if not then 1gb. If the motherboard only takes up to "DDR 400", then the ram needs to be either DDR400 or below (Also called PC3200. wouldnt get any less than that, its just going to get outdated very quickly). Good brands for budget is Crucial, if you are really pushing the boat out then get Corsair Ultra Low Latency RAM. Not really necessary, i use Crucial value ram (2 x 512mb PC3200) <_< . still works well

Case - looks are important if you are as shallow as me, but not a lot else matters... It needs to have the same "Form Factor" as your motherboard, they will both say in the descriptions.

PSU - DONT SKIMP ON POWER. 480W or 550W Powersupply, Antecs TruePower range are very good.

Dvd drive / Cd drive. Sony DRU-710A is a very good DVD writer with all the features you could want. I use it and a generic cdrw drive, its not even branded but works great.

Cooling - Add atleast one exhaust fan, size demends on the case. 80mm, 100mm and 120mm are standards. The bigger it is, the slower it turns and so the quieter it is. Also, you may want to get a more expensive CPU cooler, expecially if you get a fast processor. My 3.2 P4e still reaches nearly 70 Deg C when im encoding video, thats with the top of the range cooler! Saying that, they were nicknamed PrescHots for a very good reason

Soundcard - Your Motherboard will probably come with 5.1 or 7.1 sound, no need for a soundcard really... if you want one get Creative probably, cheap and reputable. PCI of course.

Dont think ive left anything out, err... any questions?

err, neither of those are building your own...
Alienware is also very overpriced for what you get.

yup alienware is way too overpriced. its just those flashy chassis and monitor that make it look so appealing. u can build a good one yourself for much less.

like cofneverlivetotell said, it depends whether u want it for gaming/or just to run apps like PS, Dreamweaver etc. if for gaming the two thing u shld look for are memory (minimum 1 gig) and a graphics card. a top of the line gfx card wld cost u some dough tho.
if again, its for gaming, u need a good mouse(i recommend logitech MX 510) and a keyboard (logitech again).

Yea, building your own computer is much cheaper, & you know what you are getting. But yea, it all depends on what you wana use it for. No matter what you should always have atleast above 500 ram. I'm not a computer gamer, because my PC is storebought & it was cheap. So I have standard Intel graphics card, & a 128mb ram(standard, & 256 stick which I bought. Next computer I'm deffinately building on my own. If you need parts, look online, or go to Frys electronics. They probably have an online store anyways. But don't go to just a regular electronics store if it's gonna be custom. So if ya want some help, ya gotta be more specific on what your needs are.

    epox 8kda3+ mobo
    1gig ocz pc3200
    nec dvd burner
    cdrw
    asprie case
    ati 9800pro 128
    500w psu
    audigy2 zs gamer edition

i get about 60-70fps in d3 at high settings
i get about 100-150fps on hl2 at higher settings
    and about 300fps in cs1.6
    about 120fps in bf1942

Sorry to say my friend, but you have that so wrong. Alienware is the biggest rip off you can buy, I remember making a comparison between buying with Alienware and building yourself on a top of the line system with dual graphic cards, and 2 gig's of RAM etc, and you could save 50% on a system like that by building by yourself. Also, Dell build some of the worst PC's ever. I will never reccommend anyone to buy a dell, as they are extremely difficult to upgrade. As for the AMD and Intel argument, AMD for gaming, Intel for anything else like video editing, altohugh you will not notice the difference really.
