    that doesn't work. youre assuming that .999.... is equal to 1 when you subtract it. so it would be

    8.9(repeating)x=9 [/b][/quote]
    You can try to disprove it all you want, but you cant...Mathmaticaly, it works everyway.

    similar to recuring numbers * 99,

    anyways when using boundarys, and sets i.e [0,1) a set that starts at zero and goes upto but doesn't include 1. Would still have the number 0.99' in the set, however using your proof above would sudgest that this number is not in the set [0,1) as 0.99' = 1, which therfore proves the set theory wrong, which means university maths is bull, and that I am about to waste the next 4 years of my life. (Going to shout at my lecturer tomorrow)

    Fun lol

    Nice proof btw, they never taught us that, first thing we get to prove is that \/2| is irrational.

    Anyways will find a nice level 1 degree question for you guys tomorrow, may even chuck in some creds

    :P Daz

    It's true, no matter how you much wanna argue against it.

    .33333333~ = 1/3; every one knows that.

    Therefore 2 * 1/3 = 2/3 = .66666666666~

    Therefore 3 * 1/3 = 3/3 = .99999999~ = 1

    wow, thats really weird. I looked on a bunch of different sites and all of the different proofs, and it works:

    Crazy, it's like a mathematical anomily but it's not, kinda mind blowing when you look at the proofs.

    It's not really an anomaly. It's just that people in general can't understand the concept of infinity all that well. The 9's after the decimal point never end, and that's what people have trouble working with.

    When I said it was 'like' an anomaly I was saying it with the meaning of 'it doesn't seem logically possible for .999 -> infinity to be equal to 1' I used it as a figure of speech. Look at this simple proof.

    1/9 =.111 -> infinity
    2/9 =.222 -> infinity
    etc
    9/9 =.999 -> infinity

    But any number divided by itself is 1. But if this is true than doesn't this mean that 1 = .999 -> infinity? Maybe I am missing something <_<

    You don't think it's mind blowing? Maybe I am just retarded because I think it is. ;)
