I've been making websites for almost 4 years now and the best tip I can give you is to do a plan. When doing a design, dont start with the graphics, start with knowing where will you put your menu, content and all the extra stuff you want. Then start shaping the areas and last do the details. If you haven't found a name for your site yet, do the designing first or you will lose way too much time. And according to the design and stuff you put in the name will come to you all of a sudden.
