    I would say:
    Windows Movie Maker
    Adobe Premiere Pro
    Sony Vegas

I have vegas and its good and is pretty easy to understand the simple parts. movie Maker is free, (well they all are if you know how) and its real easy to use. Never used Adobe premier.

WINDWOS MOVIE MAKER !! no waaaaaaay

The top three out there are (in this order

    1. Final Cut Pro (only for Macs I believe...)
    2. Adobe Premiere / After Affects
    3. Sony Vegas

I peronally use Premiere and AFX, and if you know Photosop well, their interface should not confuse you that much. You will also need to have a good compresssor for your videos. This is where Sorenson Squeeze comes in. I use it, and find it to be unbelievable. I'm ccurrently making a Halo2 montage also, and its very time-consuming. Anyways, hope you find the program(s) you like...good luck 1

In order of quality and professionalism:

    1) Adobe Premiere / After Effects
    2) Final Cut Pro
    3) Sony Vegas

Compressor I find most helpful is Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. I think they have a new version out now too.

Nope...even though I use Premiere, and am a big fan, I have to admit that Final Cut Pro is wwaaaaaayyy more professional. Final Cut Pro has actually been used to produce movies such as Napoleon Dynamite, Jarhead, Cold Mountain, and The Rules of Attraction.

Yes, that may be so but in all honesty, how effect-laden were those films? They were (with the slight exception of Jarhead) actually rather bland in the special effects department.

in terms of top quality with the most options.

adobe after effects, simply the best. The only movie editing program with its own forum on cgtalk, so you know its the best.
