Maya is gay. Even after attending a short course on it, I still don't really know how to use it lol.

    Beginner - Cinema4D - $895 just the core software
    1ntermediate - 3DSMax - $2600 approx
    advanced - Maya - $5000

just a simple observation by difficulty of use and prices - 3dsmax can get difficult to use to a newbie - cinema4d is prety straight forward and maya .. no need to talk about it :D

I would say hardly anyone have got a legal copy of them but i do have 3DSMax given to me by my university since i do a modelling course - and ye it is industry standard and with mental vray = awesome :)

if you are new .. go for Cinema4D or blender there was one more which i cant remember the name of right now and it wasnt blender

there is no best all 3 software do astounding models when you get use to it - maya is amazzing but its a very hard hard program to use its for professionals and you can make some real life CG .. toy story was made in maya

best is maya what proffessionals use, spiderman movie effects were done with it, u can check it out on Autodesk's homepage reading maya prochure. it costs like 6000$

for you is best 3dsm or c4d, they are also most used. 3dsm is more complicated but it needs lower system requirements than c4d.

im using c4d, i can tell you its great. soon i hope to use also 3dsm

the most known 3d program companies are Autodesk(Maya and 3dsm) and Maxon(cinema4d), so u can check about em on google

If you're looking to do modelling, I suggest you look up ZBrush 3. Simple, intuitive interface, yet an extremely powerful tool. It has Photoshop support, and is easy to pick up. Of course, does require creativity and some talent.

I don't use any of these programs, but I've heard they are all great
    3DSMax
    Cinema4D
    Maya
And a lot of people use zBrush for painting/coloring their models.

yes, because blender would want to lose all credibility and release a version of their software just loaded full of viruses.

    Softimage XSI ftw!!

Assasin's Creed was made in it! I think.. =X

3dsm or c4d. Softimage XSI is probably better but it costs $3000-$5000 bucks.

I can't believe no one heard of softimage yet. :P
