Anyone have any tips for me? I use GIMP and I'd like to be able to have more of that PS effect. And don't suggest me to just download PS, at the moment I'm comfortable with GIMP. However I may download PS on my laptop which is more sufficient at running large programs like PS.

Many people who us PS have a more realistic effect to their sigs. Not sure exactly what it is, but it just seems like a lot of PS sigs come out clearer and more realistic than GIMP sigs.

Most of the time you just have to experiment with the filters and other things that Gimp provides you. It may not have as many options for filters and such as Photoshop does, but some of the things in Gimp are just as good IMO.

GIMP is great in fact. What I suggest, is to get accustomed to smudging. Smudging looks great on sigs, and also try to get used to c4ds and stocks. GIMP doesn't have all of the stuff Photoshop has but many sigs are just smudging with coloring and c4ds etc. It is like the structure of some sigs, so I don't think you'll have a problem with GIMP. :)

Oooh thankies.. I tried smudging before but it turned out not so good lol. I'll try it again. And I love using c4ds BTW. My Yuna and Lightning sigs below both use c4ds

The only thing I can say about gimp considering the fact that I have no experience with it is that I don't think it is as user friendly as photoshop but in years to come I think it will emerge as one of photoshops largest competitors and the alternative to photoshop as paint shop --- is pretty much being left behind of late but I think as for your images its more of a case of you needing to improve your own knowledge rather than changing a program will make it better, unfortunately there are no shortcuts to success in art.

Honestly, if you're comfortable with gimp, why are you trying to mimic effects from a program you don't want? Thats like saying you want something that tastes like a pizza without using sauce or cheese.

I never said I didn't want PS. So don't put words in my mouth. However my desktop can't handle PS.

^That helped me a lot when I used GIMP.I don't recommend smudging or brushing in GIMP as they come out in frames instead of smooth blending.

GIMP can do some nice things but it has some limits, here are some of my old tags in GIMP:

I have more but I don't want to fill the whole page up with tags.Just so you know you can do half of what a photoshop tutorial tells you and the rest just improvise. You should try coloring with gradients in GIMP too, GIMP can do some really cool stuff with them.

Gimp actually is great.I made all my sigs with Gimp. My favorite is the one I'm using now. You just have to find some styles, not those old "worn" styles, like making a BG, then pasting a render.
