Ive noticed in sig making that whatever kind of work you do that the style can only fall into 4 main catagories Default,Smudge,Abstract,Grunge. Now this is all great but it really drives me mad when i hear someone say a style is "overused" because by definition all these styles are "overused". idk what to do, do i follow a trend move from style to style or do i stick to a style im use to and aim to get as good as i can at before moving on?

    What would you do?

I try to come up with my own stuff and my own styles that no one else is doing. Even if it's something simple like this.

If I were you, I wouldn't care about those trends. I will just do anything to keep my signatures flow, no matter what techniques I used that might be a part of trends or not. Our true styles are within ourselves of making the signature in best way from what we see.

Defaults and smudging are one in the same, as the smudge tool is a PS default and has been for several versions now. IMO, neither are really a "style", but rather a description of the tools used.

In general I think people are overthinking "styles"... As it applies to art "style" simply means the way somthing was designed. I suppose it's not wrong to classify things as being a certain style; be it grunge, abstract, tech-y, w/e. I just don't see why it matters; you don't have to work only in one "style" when making a piece, infact use of various styles can be one of the biggest draws of a piece.

When some people lable a "style" as being whored I think that they're refering more towards another artist's style; i.e. copying the exact way a piece was done (not ripping, but trying to emulate a specific look rather than a technique). A lot of this "style whoring" comes from people following tutorials to the letter, using them to recreate that one specific look, rather than using them to learn new techniques that should then be applied to one's own ideas.

It's always good to try new things, especially when you're first starting out as it gives you a solid base of different "styles" to pull from. I wouldn't say that one should follow a trend, it's alright to dabble and try new things, but when a lot of people jump on a trend it just kills the appeal b/c people get so tired of seeing it. The Spiderman 3 movie poster stock is a prime example; it was used in one piece, then a few more, the next thing you knew there were hundreds of tags that all looked similar b/c most people used the same dark/blue-ish grey scheme....

Still in the end it doesn't matter what "style" you work in, as long as you're doing your own thing and enjoy what you're doing.

I would make a winamp skin or interface template as not many people use my style.

He said exactly what you need to know; just do your own thing and don't care about "trendwhoring", just do what you want.
