From the looks of it, you shot this in Auto mode...never do that, because it almost forces you to use flash...Flash = bad in MOST circumstances. Rather set it in Manual mode, and teach yourself which settings are right for what types of shots... Once you learn how to use it, you'll be an expert. In the day I shoot at around 1/800, at night anywhere between 1/3 and 1/25 depending on how much i expect the subject to move. (this all also depends on the lens and the f-steps you ahve it at as well). What it comes down to, is use the meter -- the dashed line with the arrow. You want the arrow as close to the center as you can get it.(adjust speed with wheel by the shutter) I normally like to overexpose my shots a little bit, so I tend to try and keep it a little to the right. The farther right it is, the brighter the pic, but the longer it takes to take in light. (and vica-versa). also, the arrow will only show up once you found a focus point (had a AF dot find its subject) To change the f-steps in M mode, hold the (Av+/-) button to the upper right of the display, and roll the wheel. F steps are something you really want to experiment with. The lower it is, the more light that comes in at once. The higher it is, the less light comes in at once.
