    Thank you.

You're absolutely right, there is a world of difference between true depression and being a bit miserable. Just as there's a massive difference between a bad cold and the 'flu, real depression isn't about being down, p*ssed off or having a bad day. I've never suffered it myself, but believe me, I really wouldn't want to. Real depression isn't teenage angst. It's not attention seeking or having a hissy fit because the world isn't progressing the way you want it to. But I'm sick of the term being thrown around, mainly in the media, that everyone's suffering from depression.

I'm far more disturbed by the amount of people who think suicide is somehow easy. I wonder if these people could actually, seriously imagine what it's like to actually sit there and plan to take their own life, to take a knife and not just scratch the surface, not just puncture the skin a little, but to penetrate the wrist to sufficiently severe a major artery. Suicides are rarely easy - they're almost never a case of slipping blissfully into the ether, leaving all your troubles behind. They're usually prolonged and painful - I've had cases of lysol, antifreeze, paracetamol poisoning (extraordinarily painful), suicide by chainsaw (I kid you not) and cut throats. People who think it's somehow cowardly, easy or selfish are living in an absolute dreamworld.

    Sorry for the rant

Rant away - this is a topic that I have ranted on more than once myself.

I am clinically depressed and have been since I was 12. I have attempted suicide on three occassions. All three times I chickened out. It's NOT easy. If it were, there wouldn't be so many people failing because they got scared.

I'm also currently studying to be a psychologist, and I'm thinking that due to my experiences, I'd like to specialize in the effects of depression and try to help people who are depressed - because I know what it's like.

One thing I noticed with the attention-seeking thing you mentioned - people who tend to call a lot of attention to their 'depression' are usually the ones who are faking it to get attention. Someone who is truly depressed will not call attention to it, and oftentimes you won't even be able to tell. Why? They don't want the attention, and they don't want to feel like they'd be bothering anyone else with their problems.

Really, the amount of ignorance on this topic is staggering - and disturbing.

Sadly there are alot of video game related deaths... Now some may blame the games and how "addictive" they are such as the case of Shawn Wooley the famous everquest addict who finally ended his life. Alot of speculation lead people to belive it was due to his only friend being an online one double crossed him and stole from him. His mother sadly was on a crusade to attack sony entertainment holding them responsible for his death but as more of the story came out it was proven He had a large history of Mental illness and shouldnt of been out on his own. Nevermind being allowed to go weeks and weeks without someone checking on him... Video games and Mental illness clearly dont mix... Neither does alot of things and mental illness unsupervised.

Here is the shawn wooley story.

There is alot more on this kid. I belive that above article is more siding with the mother. In my opinion if she knew he was mentally ill and allowed him to be living alone and not checking up on him then she was not helping.

Hell im 22 and I cant go 2 days nevermind 2 weeks without my mother calling me and she lives in another state.

What a fool.. we all have hard times in our lives.. I mean i guess my parents shoulda killed themselves.. living on the streets with a kid coming on the way and being in over 200,000 dollars in debt.

Seroiusly if you cant deal with life the best thing to do is probably NOT KILL YOURSELF.. Not trying to be mean as hell but seroiusly everyone has problems in life. ALso i hate how these suicides get publicity.. Some people think just cause one kid comitted suicide and was playing games that everyone else who plays games are wierdos who have no self esteem. (I say this because i play halo 2 and kids at my school think everyone who plays halo is a fat nerd with high pitched voices, which neither apply for me..)

Sterotypes really hurt people. I fully agree with you. It's not totally like this at my school, but still.

If we looked at almost every publicized teen suicide, many of them would some how have a link to Video games. And people would bitch about it.

    Example:
Johnny played a video game 5 years ago when he was at his cousins in Alaska, that is why he commited suicide.
It has nothing to do with video games... but it is still saddening.

    RIP.

Yeah, the dude killed himself. Woopideedoo. And I would actually care if my parents died because I know them in real life. My parents aren't emo losers who spend all there time on the internet and who I have never met. And you are an ass. Thank you.
