A 3d Sphere

i found a tutorial on how to make a 3D sphere a long time ago, it involves making a circle, then put a lens flare on it, then use the polar coodinates distortion and something else to make it look really 3D, i forgot how to do it and can't seem to find that tutorial anymore, anyone have any idea how to do it?
