As i get firefox standard maybe that is why i don't like it and prefer Opera but again like most things its down to personal preference :)

I think cPanel has built in file manager so you could upload the files that way... then /public_html/ is the dir they go in ^_^ Hope this helped.

Linux is good all round in my opinion might not be sutiable for your grandma but atleast that you know she isn't going to beable to screw your box...
If your just considering moving i would suggest mandrake as its user-friendly then move onto the gd distros once you know what your doing. :)
All down to personal prefrence like the rest of linux personally i like both kde just seems to be current most useful :) but gnome is really good...
With Debian you get both Gnome and KDE as standard and i happen to be using KDE at present. :) Unbuntu should have KDE default correct me if i'm wrong
