if you are trying to select something on a different layer then it wont work, but i dont know just a guess
make sure on the layers pallete you have the correct layer selected, the one you are trying to select atleast, or that the visibility is also selected
if its already rendered you can just use the magic wand then select the inverse with ctrl + shift + i then cut it out and paste it to what you are...
