the 5850 cannot give you 5970 stock performance. that said, you can later buy another 5850 and put them in crossfire for 5970 level performance...
compare the 5870 to the 5850 5-10% more performance for a 30% price increase they both have the same memory the same cooler the big difference...
I'd still go for a 5850. Better to buy a slower card more frequently. besides, what resolution are you gaming at and what games do you play?
