If the guy said AGP was faster, then its probably an AGP 2x/4x card or a low 8x and normal PCI.
It all depends on your sound card, if it does not support 4.1 then it can't do it.
The bass would still work, if your sound card supports it (I.E. usually non integrated sound) you could use the 4.1 sound. No specific splitter...
You could do it, it would just not have the same features as surround sound speakers. Music would just be displayed out of 4 speakers instead of 2.
