it is a catagory 5 right now but it should downgrade to a catagory 4 before it hits land due to the warmer waters of the coast.
good luck to anyone in the area and i hope it turns out ok

Yeah, hopefully no one is injured or worse, killed. There will probably be more hurricanes considering this is just the begining of hurricane season.

I seen it today on the weather channel; Mandatory evacuation in some parts of Texas. They better get out of there, you seen what Katrina did to New Orleans.

Ritas a category 5 expected to hit saturday, I don't think it will drop down it might beat Andrew if it has luck. Headed towards Texas has 5% chance of hitting New Orleans again tough break for em, eh

I live in The Woodlands, TX which is an area quite close to Galveston. They have closed school for tomorrow and friday here (YESS!!!! :D :D) but we are expected to get flooding and power outages. I am going to snap quite a few shots with my digital camera. I will post them here too.

My cousins said it took 6 hours to get from Houston to Livingston (normally 1 hour 30 minute trip).

Global warming is still in the theory stage... even though I am believing its true since these hurricanes are getting huger every 4-10 years or so.
