make sure on the layers pallete you have the correct layer selected, the one you are trying to select atleast, or that the visibility is also selected
Yea, uh that has nothing to do with it. I am 100% sure the problem is that he set his feather to something like 20px.
Select > all Thats how you select something. Or take out the rectangular marquee tool and just drag. I haven't seen the tutorial so i am just guessing.
