Well, I'm living with my parents until I can afford my own place, and get done with college...

Anyway, My computer... from what I understand, it doesn't take up much electricity. My mom, on the other hand says it costs too much money to have it on, so she yells at me whenever I am not at the computer, even though I might be doing a defrag, virus scan, or download.

Now, my computer has a 400 watt psu, and a 19" crt monitor. If I were to leave it on 24/7 (like the refridge...) does it really add up to a big amount of money??

Also, Is there any way to minimize the amount of sound? I know having 6 fans in your computer will make some sound, but I need the fans to keep my parts cool.

If you tell me to say a lie to my mom, she'll throw my computer out the window... literally...

same here, I have a 420 watt PSU, but I guestimate that the computer could run on only 270(before I got a better case I was using an old 225 PSU and it only crashed while running Ntune) I also set it on energy conservation. here is what you do... google a power sueage comparison and own her ass.

I googled, and with a screen, and the PC on normal it should only be 200$ a year to power it, but i assume you don't use it nearly so much and have the screen off when away so tell her it is more like 5$ a month

well, my parents pay for it too, so, until i can get my own place, I have to sink down to their level...

My grandpa leaves his computer on 24/7, yet my mom doesn't care a bytch, since that is her dad. The world is just so hypocritical :P

If I had my choice, I would buy a solar panel, and put my computer onto it. problem solved. I'll still have electricity to back it up if the sun doesnt shine for a few days... I just won't have to worry anymore..

edit: my mom is a penny saver. she saves every cent she can get. It took me and my dad a good 3 months to convince her to get DSL instead of our stinking dial-up...

Let me add some stupid points:

    - How powerful your PSU is does not tell how much your computer uses energy, it just tells the maximum power it can provide to the components, but it only consumes the amount that is needed, so a 500 watt PSU could only provide 150 watts if your computer only needed 150 watts!

    - Monitor (CRT) consumes the most energy of all components on your computer, so tell her that when you have the monitor turned off the power consumption is very minimal and does not increase the electric bill nowhere near than the fridge, the television (or multiple of them :P) and other things in your house.

    - Instead of fans use water cooling system :D
