OK, well I've been looking at a lot of templates on this forum, and I like a lot. However, the "pro" template-makers make suggestions about the templates, usually involving the use of bevels. Why not use bevels ? I'm just wondering because I am going to make a template soon and was wondering what is the best way to achieve a textured look for buttons (expecially rollovers). Thanks ;)

Dodge tool ? For website templates...not sure how I would be able to use it.

the dodge tool creates bevel like effects, but they turn out smoother

remember to raise and lower the exclusion (thats how its spelled) to your liking. i think it works like heaven on orbs.

If your using textured bevels and know how to make them look right, go for it!

It's just stupidly large bevels with huge gradients and drop shadows which looks really bad.

Oh and sometimes, inner shadow + inner glow can look good together too, but you need to change the colours.

with bevels u have less control over what it looks like. Sometimes bevels can look ok. or if u bevel lower the opacity. idk i just dont like bevels. they are quick and dirty way of doing a 3d looking effect.

If anything, the gradient overlay and stroke combos can be very convincing.
