Hi all! Ive made this post just to know how you all feel about linux... Hard? An OS just for experts? Sucks? currently i have to say im satisfied with linux... its a stable operative system and a cheap alternative to the well known windows xp. Ive used SuSE Linux 9.1 so far, but when i changed my card for a radeon x800 pro it all messed up... mixed colors etc, and theres no hardware update in YaST... So i started to use a portuguese distribution, Caixa Magica wich i found to be a very good distribution of Linux, made in my homeland ^_^ yea.. portugal rules... and we are gonna win the world football championship hehe... so leave your opinion here, and help others find more of this OS. I would like to see any tips and linux related things posted here and if you can, plz tell me how i can have 3D aceleration in Linux... cause i only get 2D!! cya ppl, peace!
Linux simply owns its much more stable and less vulnerable to attacks then windows plus if u got a card thats supported u can game these things are a plus to take linux but the thing that made me choose linux is that it takes less memory and cpu capacity to run it which means u got more left for games and apps
Yea, Linux is great. Ive used the following distros: Knoppix Mandrake SUSE Slackware Linspire (like Lindows) Kubuntu Gentoo RedHat that's about it, lol. Linux is great for all levels of experience. I am novice, as I know how to install Linux, and do simple tasks. I use both Linux (Mandrake) and Windows XP. Windows for gaming, Linux for everything else.
I think the fact linux being based in a UNIX system really improves its performance and security. I use it since the last year and i really like it. Linux versions nowadays have nothing to do with older, where the installion of the OS was made only by text mode. Linux is getting more acessible to ppl, and i believe, in the future the console will be totally unecessary. and more, linux has very freeware apps that really are usefull. and the compability problem with windows apps has become null since Wine, WineX and others appeared. The only thing i believe that trhows away newcomers, is the lack of compability with some new hardware, and the thousends of configs need. And, like i said before, some tasks can only be performed by console. thats my opinion about it
Well, just dont say that linux is more stable than windows, its the same, you just have to know how to use it. You use caixa magica aka caixa tragica? That is considered one of the worse linux distros. Want a good advice? LFS, the best linux you can have..
What? Linux IS more stable than Windows. Its proven to be much more stable. Windows is more of a user-friendly desktop OS, but there must be a reason why the vast vast majority of webservers run Linux/Unix. Dont you think? If it was any good, some of us might've heard of it before.
i've been using ubuntu for a year now, and i use it for everything. i don't use windows except when i'm at school, and the sys admin is thinking of switching all the computers to linux b/c windows is always crashing. so i say linux is definately more stable than windows!
yeah im running wineX as well i have no probs gaming on linux but i run xp as an xtra os for games that really dont wanna play on linux
yes it is true that most of the webservers are *nix but I dont belive that is because of stability, if you said it was because of security I would belive, but thats also relative. and I repeat, Windows can be stable like Linux, my time of experience with win has proven that to me.
if you want a 3d acceleration card, then you'd likely have to use integrated audio, when I tried redha for a while I was able to play this 3d penguin race with Int audio. it was a bit choppy, but acceptable. EDIT: I will pay someone creds for helping me set up gentoo, I am just at a point where I am about to cringe... I partitioned via my windows CD disc and formatted/mounted via my gentoo disc, but I can't get linux to boot... i know i must be doing something wrong, but... really I need a distro that's good with 64 bit like gentoo but is a bit easier to set up.
yeah well im am currently taking a unix class, and what im majoring in requires me to become very knowlegable with unix/linux based platforms. i am going to buy a sata drive soon and put windows on that and use my crappy 40gig and put a bunch of linux distros on that, find out which ones i like.
here are the facts, you can choose to deny them one way or the other but it's pointless. linux IS more stable than windows the ui is way more customizable. it's free. windows has way more compatible programs, and support available. if you feel like it, you can dualboot linux and windows, but it's not as easy as running one only. the perfect world would be linux with windows programs, but that's not the way it is. any route you go, you're better off than choosing a ----ty mac.
After some time using linux and windows i can surely say that my system never crashed in linux... unix is a good base for an OS like linux. KDE is a way good graph app, and very appealing also. About caixa magica, i can say its not that bad IMO lol.. just gave it a chance anyway because its portuguese  with suse i had a bad time configuring my graph card only by text mode... (SUSE 9.1) and i dont have patience to download the 10 yea linux is a good OS however it still is a bit complicated to config.
