To help you out here's how I usually start. First I pick two colors that work good together. Usually they are the same everytime I make a sig. First go with a dark red, and then a good yellow, not too bright though. I mostly use my own brushes. Some are from deviant art, and others from GR members (Whitey :D). Mostly cloudy brushes, grungy brushes, or anything that looks creative. Here are a few:

There are sh!t loads more but those should be good or just use the ones you have.

Next, I make a new layer everytime I switch colors. So, I make a layer and use a couple of brushes in red. Make a new layer do some yellow. Fill a good amount of each layer, but not too much. You'll learn after a while. Then, After you think you have enough, play around with each layer. Go down them one by one and adjust their blend modes. Overlay, Soft light, Hard light, try em all. If it doesn't look good, keep it at Normal. Then, add some adjustment layers. I usually play with Selective Color and Color Balance. It takes some time to get the right colors, but keep working at it. As for the render in the sig, I usually feather it after I cut it out. 5-20 px depending on the render. Experiment and you will be as good as a banana. :D

Make sure to start off with a big base usually 400x400 so you can pick the part of the piece you like most.

    here's some quick examples.
