Ok, been using the family PC for ages now, never had a computer all for me....(maybe some +rep coz you feel sorry for me? :)).
Anyways this Christmas me Dad has said he would get me a Shiny new PC.
Desktop, and I would really like a gaming one tbh. it can't be like really expensive though.
I was just wondering what you would suggest, and you know what parts etc...

    edit: K i sounded like a prick there....lol.
    Computers aren't my thing tbh...

OK, I don't feel sorry for you...

check out http://www.tigerdirect.com and look at their barebones.

Barebones gives you a case, motherboard, and CPU for a cheap price.

You can get any RAM cheap these days. You want at least 512mb or 1gig.
You should look for an AGP Video Card, at least 256mb video ram.
You also should get a high Hard Drive. I've seen 300gigs for $140, that would give yopu plenty space.

If you need a monitor, get a LCD Flat Panel. tigerdirect has some good deals on 17" monitors.

yeah build one, and dont tell me you dont know how because i didnt. all i did was search google for how to build a computer. i did a little bit of reading and i knew basicaly everything. plus its more rewarding in the end to know you built it. or you could just buy a dell.

I dont know about the dell bit, ive looked at their stuff on that build a computer thing and for what you get its very overpriced, plus it doesnt tell you everything you want to know. <_<

I would DEFINITELY recommend building your own computer, if not for the experience but so you know exactly whats in it, which helps if you need to upgrade at a later date

Okay lets say one sentence: Don't take MEDION.

I always have troubles with our MEDION, first time; cooler was'nt good so our pc was overheat, second time the computer won't start, etc. etc.

building your computer is the best thing to do. and the fun part is is that you can make it however way you want. here are some pics of mine:

You can make everything on ur own cheaper and just as good if not better than what you would get paying $500 more. I payed $700 for my rig.

    p4b533 mobo (sucky)
64 mb ati radeon 7000 (sucky but not bad for gaming)
    512 mb ram
1 80 gig seagate barracuda hd
1 40 gig western digital hd
    NEC dvd burner (VERY nice)
pair of bose speakers (best desktop speakers ive ever heard in my life, $100)
    wireless keyboard/mouse
    4 cathodes (neon lights)
    side biohazzard fan grill
    round uv reactive ide cables
    2.53 ghz processor

If i had some money id get a new video card, and another 512 mb of ram. Then i'd have a kickass system

Building ur own system is very very easy. I could explain it right here in fact, im going to:

    1. get ur case and screw ur motherboard in. It only fits one way so you cant mess that up
    2. Put all ur cards in the slots
    3. Slide in ur drives and screw them in
    4. take ur ide cables and hook them from ur mobo to ur drives.
    5. Plug everything in.

Thats it and its so simple and just like someone has said already, very awesome feeling knowing that you made this computer. Ive made 4 customs in my life and im only 14. So trust me, its easy and dont go buyin a dell or emachine or something, they always come with extra crap that you wont want.

    good luck

btw, definitley go with an lcd monitor. I would give so much to have one

the first thing you need to know:

If you want gaming, go AMD

They're WAY cheaper, and perform better.

Choose a processor speed to your liking, anything rated above 3000+ will suit your needs, although having more power is always nicer.

At least 512mb, that's bare minimum. To be safe I'd go 1gig.

When you buy your mobo you have to consider upgrading and future compatibility. Go with a pci-express x16 graphics port motherboard, you'll be happy you did in the future.

As for the video card, I would do a 6800gt or 6600.

If you want more help just PM me.

    i made this

this is what's known as a budget gamer PC

basically for under a grand (minus shipping, and let's hope you don't live in california or you're paying tax) you'd get an insane machine that will handle any game you throw at it.

here is what would suggest on a moderate budget....

    PSU:400W min 500+ recomended
MOBO: MSI plat should support SLI, 4gigs dual channel ddr ram, int audio. (socket 939)
    processor AMD athlon 64 3000+ or higher(socket 939)
RAM: 1 gig(512*2) dual channel PC3200 DDR ram
    GFX card: PCI-e nvidia g-force 6800
hardrives:2*80gig hds, set once for page filing and data backing up and games, set the other for the OS
OS:Windows XP home OEM or windows 2000 OEM
Screen:Decent CRT monitor, should support 1280*1024 resolution and shoudl be decent sized. get LCD or plasma only if you have cash to blow and want worse performance(or are willing to give up on some aspects)

that should give you a very good initial system and it should allow for a fair amount of upgrading for the years to come, within a few years if you manage to get cash you can upgrade/swap for this:
    AMD athlon 64 x2 4800+
    4gigs ram
    dual 7800s in SLI

needless to say that assumes that prices are to go down alot

That is actually a pretty decent build for under a grand. Building your own comp is the best for any gamer. You might want to consider it ^_^

K, Will be like mostly the dad who'll be doing this ---- tbh.
I fancy building one, reckon it would be ownage with customising it and all ---- like that.
Thing is I've heard of people building there own one and not being able to start it etc etc...
Plus, does it take a lot of work to build you own...?
