What is the point of 48,000 fonts? You will never look through or use them all in your entire lifetime (unless you dont do anything else). Just search for the ones that you need when you need them and you will save a lot of space.

Your best best in this instance * if these fonts are for photoshop only is to go in to program files / common files / adobe and place all your fonts in the designated font folder. That will only allow adobe to view the fonts and wont drain your system as if they were just placed in windows/fonts

You need to get font management software. i use extensis suitcase and it is the best purchase i ever made. it allows u to activate only the fonts u want to use, when u want to use them. u can keep your fonts in any folder, and u can preview all the fonts before activating them. this way, i can type in a company name (if i wanted to make a logo) and scroll through the fonts with the preview to see which one is best, and then activate it.

having this prevents any lag and the ridiculously long drop down menus that people have. i highly reccommend u check this out!

If you have 48,000 fonts just think of it like 4 Photoshops, not even four open, just four on your hardrive, would that lag your computer...probaly not...and there arnt even 48,000 good fonts so your sorta silly in my opinion :P

    Not quite handy i think.

Just select the good ones, and delete the ones you wont use.
