Ok, I have an older computer that I want to put linux on. I heard Mandrake takes up lots of room, etc. blah blah blah..

    My comp's specs:

    MAN: DELL
    CPU: P3 900mhtz
    RAM: 128mb SDRAM
    HDD Space: 40gb
VIDEO: On-board (some intel-based onboard card)

Currently I have Windows 2000 SP4 on it, but want to move to Linux.

Now, being a noob at linux, I know the basics, how to get it, how to install, etc. Although I do not know the best one out there, using my current specs. I want to be able to use the desktop like in windows, where you can put icons on it, and run proccesses from it, probably using the 'K' desktop *mind block*

Anyway, help me pick the best one. I'll just use it for school stuff, writing, and webdesigning... No gaming except for the little fun games that come with it...

i've been thinking of getting linux as well, are all window compatable programs compatable on linux as well? if so, how does it differ in the actual use of the program.

I know you can use Wine to try to emulate PC apps, but regular Windows apps wouldnt work on linux. some drivers will work with linux if you get 'Lindows', cant remember what they renamed that as...

    That's what I understand..

Hmm, I have used ubuntu and Mandriva. I grew up using mandrake, but once I saw ubuntu I liked it a tad more.
Since your new to linux though, Mandriva or Mandrake will be easier to learn. Then step it up to something more advanced :D

How old are you by the way?
I am 13, and have been using linux all my life, so if your not above 16, I wouldn't try installing it on your own. You could try, but I would have someone help you :D

Good luck in your search to find the perfect linux Distro! (am looking for the perfect one actually, I am thinking about making one since its quite easy)

Actually, I am 20, and I have installed Mandrake, SUSE, RedHat, Linspire, and FreeBSD before. I'm not that noobish, rather a novice user. I know my way around ;) I just don't know all the distros, and what is better for my older machine..

Thanks for your help, guys, waiting for more opinions...

    ok, just checking ;)
You could always find a group of friends (if your like me, then thats not an option xD (I am the only kid that is computer literate xD)) To create a distro.
It will take a bit of time to get it right though ;) Fairly easy compared to how hard you think it would be.

Good luck (mandrake and ubuntu are my suggestions since thats all I have tried ;))

Linux is a whole nother OS (Operating System) like Windows, or Mac OSX.

It can run in windows, on cd, or even on the same partition as Windows..

I am currently trying out Kubuntu, its pretty good, but the only prob i have is the Konqueror is way slow when going to webpages... but fast on downloads..

Nother prob I have on here is I cant get Firefox to load its .bin file, which obviously is a .exe file in Linux, correct? well, it doesnt load, anyone know how?

I am currently using Ubuntu as it is updated unlike Debian, apart from these two i don't like many others... Gentoo is a good choice but i suggest that before you attempt to have a shot at installing it be familar with linux anyway :P FreeBSD isn't bad but i think its not as good as it could be. As for the best linux there isn't one.. its all down to personal preference! ;)

i have been running Ubuntu for 1 years on my laptop. I have it set up to do a dual boot with XP Pro on the other partition. i would say that i use Ubuntu about 98% of the time. the only time i use XP is so i can use photoshop. so i would definately reccomend Ubuntu!
