Try using the fill tool instead. Edit>Fill then select color.

Hrm after you try what D3v!L, if it doesn't work, well, how much ram/memory do you have. You may not have enough ram/memory to run the program correctly. And if you have enough, after itjusts sits there does it finally say in parenthesees ( Not responding? ) Maybe try to reinstall.. hope this helps.. +rep appreciated :)

If you have less than 128mb of ram, time for a major update.

defragging your computer could help too. if your drive is full, programs cant run very fast.

Reinstalling programs usually fixes them, if they dont then make sure you have at least 256ram, also programs can get memory leaks if left on too long. Defrag your comp, you can do this overnight as it does take a long time. Sometimes filling large documents will take more time also

Make sure you dont leave your computer on for too long. If you've had it on for a while, you should prolly restart it to cure any lost memory problems.
