ok when i boot up my computer i get this error message > C:\windows\system32\hal.dll when i insert the xp boot disk i get another error message this > Not Compatible with x64 mode. Please install 32-bit 86 operating service What do i do?
are you running an AMD or Athalon 64 bit processor? then you need Windows XP 64-bit edition disk to fix that problem. Please, just PLEASE use KNOPPIX!!! It can fix your problem in less than 5 minutes!
knoppix is a form of linux you don't even have to install if you don't want to, you can run it from cd.. my hint for you: If you're changing to Linux do not use knoppix (though it is pretty good).. use linux slackware, it's the best

It may be a bit slow, but at least you can get into an operating system so you can insert the hal.dll file. 1. get Knoppix, download it. 2. burn it onto a cd (use Nero or similar, the file is a .iso file) 3. get hal.dll and put it on a floppy disk 4. go home, and put the Knoppix disk in. 5. on the front screen, where it says 'boot>' type in 'knoppix' without the quotes. 6. clicjk on the cd-rom icon that is on the desktop. type in the address bar after file\: mnt 7. you should see your hard drive there. Now, I havent used it for awhile, but I am unshure if it can read hd's in ntfs format. I'll ponder on this and see if i can come up with anything else..
XP 64 bit is just an update of XP so it can work with 64 bit processors. Knoppix is just an operating system that runs off a cd, no installations necisary, and if i find out how to do this, I can asure you less than 5 minutes in linux, then you will be on your way back into windows...
Now I feel like a guinea pig, I tested this out myself to make sure it works. here goes: 1. get Knoppix, download it. 2. burn it onto a cd (use Nero or similar, the file is a .iso file) 3. get hal.dll and put it on a floppy disk 4. go home, and put the Knoppix disk in. 5. turn on the computer 6. on the front screen, if it says 'boot>' type in 'knoppix' without the quotes. 6. click on the hard drive icon on the desktop. Hda1 would be your first partition and so on. click only once, and a folder will open. 7. you should see your hard drive contents there. 8. put your floppy disk in with your hal.dll file. copy it, and then paste it in the right folder, which i believe is 'windows/system32/' 9. click on the 'K' in the bottom left corner, and select 'turn off'. a window should come up asking you if you want to shut down, restart, or log off. choose restart. It will do a couple things to shut knoppix down, then it will ask you to take the disk out, after it ejects the cd, push it back in, and press enter, which will restart your computer. Your problem should be fixed. If not, tell us what you get after you do that. edit- oh, remember to remove your floppy disk as well as your knoppix cd...

yea, i know... sry after you get it booted up, it should show you a command prompt that says something like "boot:" in there you will type "knoppix" without the " ". then when you actually get into knoppix, you will see a desktop, and a bar at the bottom. ignore the bar for now. there are different icons you will see on the left side. there's a desktop folder, cd-rom folder, floppy drive folder, hard drive folder, etc. click on the hard drive icon that says Hda1, which is your first partition, in which windows should be in. click 'hda1' only once, as it will bring up a new window that will show the contents of your hard drive. Your 'Windows' folder, your 'progam files' folder, etc. Go to your Windows/System32/ directory to be ready to copy the file over from your floppy. all right, now on the desktop again, there is a icon that says floppy or floppy disk. put your floppy into your floppy drive, and click the icon, and you will hopefully see your hal.dll file in the window that pops up. click on the .dll file, and like in windows, drag it into your other window which is open to your system32 folder. drop it in there, and a small list will come up, choose 'copy' to copy it to your stystem32 folder. once you have copied it, click the 'K' in the bottom left of the screen. It will bring up a menu similar to Windows start function. choose 'log out' at the very bottom of the menu. it will then popup a window similar to Windows XP, which asks you if you want to log off, shut down, or restart. Choose 'restart' and it will close down knoppix, and before the computer reboots, it will pop out the cd, and asks you to take the cd out, re-close the cdrom door, and press enter, and the computer will restart. **Be sure to take the floppy out as well** After it restarts, you should be able to get into windows and be on whatever you do. *hand cramp* you better get me some creds for doing this... oww...
