I don't know about a fast computer for $700, but you can try getting a dell. They have pretty reliable computer, but i don't know how fast they are because i haven't checked the stats in awhile.

    build your own...

mobo: MSI platinum 130$, supports 4gigs of ram, sli and has INT sound
    processor: AMD athlon 3000+ 130$
    RAM: PC3200 1gig dual channel(2*512) 80-90$
    hardrive: 40gig 7200rpm 20$
    CD/DVD writer: 12x speed 60$
GFX card: something that's about 100$
OS: windows XP student edition 90$
    powersupply: 600W 40$

total:650$ plus 50$ left over if you need a barebones case... highly upgradeable, supports dualcore processors, SLI, and up to 4gigs of ram so when this comp starts to suck in a few years you could upgrade it... a lot

Well I wouldn't buy a dell, reliable, but unupgradeable (I once tried to upgrade a dell's ram. BIG mistake!). HP sell the majority of computers around the world (16% of them) they are reliable, and they come with a good warranty. I would suggest either getting an HP or building your own, the only problem with building your own is that if something goes wrong, you don't have a warranty or a company to send it to, to get fixed.
