I've recently looked into buying a new CPU, but I don't understand the differences between them.

within the same price range, intels look like they all operate on higher frequencies (usually 3.0+), but the AMDs are all around 2.0+

I'm looking for a price between 250-350 dollars, can anyone make any suggestions?

The cpu is for my new system, and it will primarily be used for gaming, and other cpu intensive tasks, so it'll be pretty important.

It needs to be 64-bit, and I don't care which brand I'm just confused as to which one I should pick, any help appreciated, thanks!

*update* 20 credits to first person who offers me a detailed explanation of why i should choose either. I really need more information than "i prefer amd".

If its for gaming then I would go for the AMD. It is overall better with graphics. Intel is more about general use and servers.

can you elaborate on that more? why do amds perform better in spite of their lower frequencies?

    Why Amd over Intel?

    1. Better performance at all price ranges in most applications, especially general/office use, gaming, and compiling software.

    2. Better upgradability.

    3. Better overclockability at most price ranges (that is, the advantage gained from overclocking is better, even if the clock speed doesn't increase as much as the Intel equivelents)

    4. Less power and heat used, for the most part.

And here is one reliable company to tell you also.....

And for a cpu in your price range I would go with this....

A few dollars more , but worth it in the long run.

Just to let you know. Just because AMD's frequencies are lower doesnt make them slower. They actually do more work per clock cycle then Intel does.

Also the number of the AMD's, such as 3000 and so on, is the comparison to the Intel speed.

Thanks weren't necessary, just wanted to help you make the right decision.

I myself will be getting and AMDFX57 when my settlement goes through.

Your next big question should be Nvidia or ATI .

I am on the fence about my next card, I have always had great success with Nvidia's.
But playing on my bud's new X850 XT things look alot sweeter.
I'd like to see a fair comparison to the Nvidia

yea AMDs are great. I am a fan of them myself. Im using a AMD64 and while i havent got anything 64-bit... its cheaper than most Intel's and is very powerful.... Tho a whole stage under AMD64-FX.

Intel is good for their Video Encoding.. unless you absoutly need speed increase in that area... You kno ur answer. lol.

From what I've heard nVidia graphics chipsets work better with shading and texturing and stuff, just from some friends though, I wouldn't exactly call it the most reliable source, but just thought I would say it incase you hear anything about it, it could be true.
