Hey recently i got a 250Gb hard drive put it in and the bios pick it up it is saying it is 250Gb but the operating system isn't so can any one help me
well, if you are using win xp you need the diskreg thingy .. just open a notepad and write this : REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters\] "EnableBigLba"=dword:00000001 And then rename it to diskreg.reg (or anything else, just remember the .reg at the end) and then click on it and then select yes ... and then restart your pc .. EDIT : or just try to install Service pack 1 or 2
Windows automatically reserves part of the space for operating system stuff. How much space does Windows say it has?
Are you saying the OS doesnt see the drive? If that is the case run the CD that came with it, I had the same issue a while back and after running the set-up it was fine. Never had to do that in the past, but first time for everything I guess.
listen to me .. ive had the same problem, i had 2x200 gb, and when i got it in windows it said it was 137 gb or something, thats because win 2000/xp can take that much, but the bug was fixed in servicepack 1 and 2 ...
Nope, XP can take up to 1 terabyte, if memory serves me right... Its Windows 98 and Fat32 that has a problem.
nope .. ill have to argue with you about that i got this from the seagate page .. : Windows XP manufactured prior to August 2002 has a native limitation of 137GB supporting ATA interface disc drives. In this configuration WinXP will not create partitions greater than 137GB until after the Service Pack is installed and registry bit EnableBigLBA is set to 1.
I beleive that older windows XP versions do not support that much on installation and they didn't include support for it. SP2 (and perhaps 1, I only think 2 though) is fixed. if you have any problems, simply go back and partition the HDD after installing windows to reclaim your lost space.(try right clicking my computer...)
