I am creating a planet right now and it's just too plain.
So I am trying to extrude the the land with the emboss effect.
I read a tutorial on it and it says to do this:
We need to isolate the light and dark elements of the embossed layers, because we'll play with both seperately (hence the two layers.)

Use levels on the topmost one to isolate the lights by increasing the darkness until the main part of the layer is black with just a few white squiggles. This is now our "highlights" layer. You might want to rename it as such.

How do I isolate and make it black?

I don't need a tut i just need to know how to do that but it's to late i made the planet already and it came out great.

I was wondering if you knew how to create a gradient map over a custom texture?
