I want to get some new ram for my computer but I got some questions...

I heard there are different kinds of ram avaliable...can you explain the different kinds(if there are any) and tell me if there are only certain kinds I can get for my computer...if there are how can I tell?

Also, I already have about 256mb of ram in my computer...Can I just add to that 256 or do I have to replace it? how can I tell?

Any suggestions for someone who doesnt really need it for games just Photoshop, aim, internet, some small games, etc.... (dont got a gaming pc...only 32 mb gfx card...)

any more questions will be added later...

    Thanks in advanced.

Um different computers run on different types of rap.
I suggest going to your manufacturors website and looking for it ( thats what I did )
Also if you buy 256 ram its gets added on to what you have right now so you would have 512. Also I suggest going to the store and buying it. people say its cheaper off the net but when you include tax and shipping it comes out the same and most stores like Best Buy will install it for you aswell so you wont have to brake your computer or hire someone to do it.

If the PC has lots of games on it I would say go with 512 and if not I'd go with 256.

Yeah 512 would be enough for just AIM and photoshop type of stuff. I'm still learning about RAM stuff, but the best companies I know of would be Corsair RAM and Kingston RAM(pretty cheap lately). You should see a second slot next to yout current RAM stick, if you don't know what it looks like, its this in.RAM SLOTS
colors don't mean anything, just make sure its in securely and the knobs are pushed in.

i think you missed a point.

There are basically three types of ram :

    SD-RAM (Something like that) :
For pretty old comps, Pentium 2,3

    DDR-RAM :
For pretty good comps, Pentium 4, etc.

    DDR2 RAM :
Only for the latest PENTIUM processors, not AMD

    That's about it.
And normally there are numbers behind the type, eg. DDR400.

    The higher, the better.

    NO!

    SD-RAM != DDR Ram

    It won't fit.

Don't try, it might fry your ram and motherboard.

my cpu has 1024 of DDR and its pretty good, i used to have RIM a few years ago, but i didn't rewally like it so i changed it.

DDR2 is the best ull ever find in this moment.

Yup, but DDR 400 is pretty good.

    Go for Kingston.
