The cost depends on what you put in it. I bought all my parts from www.newegg.com and I built a medium quality computer for about $375

    AMD Athlon XP 2800+
    1024MB Duel Channel RAM
    80GB Western Digital HDD
    256MB nVidia GeForce FX5200 (AGP8x)
ASUS A7NX8-E Delux nVidia nForce 2 Chipset
    52x Sony CDROM
    16x Sony DVDROM
    400W ATX Standard Case

    :D
It's really what you make it.

I highly suggest this basic computer configuration, one thing though, go for the 939 pin for the processors, it will not cost any extra but you will be able to upgrade your processor more later on if you need to.

you do not need to spend extra for eye candy, it's OK to have a beige CD drive on a colored case, also if you feal a need for the same color drives as the case ust go out and buy some freaking spray paint and some masking tape and do ityourself for 2$ instead of 40.

if I had about 1.3k(or a bit more) to spend this is what I would get with gaming and general power use in mind(while still being open to upgrading as time goes by)

    AMD 64 3000+ (939pin)
    512mb ram(to be upgraded later)
    [939-pin] GigaByte K8NS Ultra-939 nForce-3 Ultra Chipset w/7.1 Sound, LAN, IEEE-1394, USB 2.0 8x AGP Motherboard
ATI radeon GFX card (the special they are offering)
    the 17in LCD monitor
2nd 160 gig HD(so you can save everything to it and make your comp crashproof or so you could configure them for dual writing for very fast saving)
and the default for most of what they have

please note though, that in terms of purchasing ram it wouldbe wisest to add more ram yourself, for less cash

also make sure to get a 64 bit processor, windows long horn is coming out with a 64 bit version targetted towards AMD processors.

for building your own I suggest www.pricewatch.com they got everything you need and the shipping is included, they don't actually sell stuff but they give you a list to help you find the cheapest price

Go to new egg and get parts there.

    Get an AMD 64 3500+ 939 pin
    gigabyte or asus motherboard
An ATI Radeon 9800 pro or a Nvidia 6600GT.

The higher the component numbers the better.

while we're on the topic, how hard is it to build a comp, and when you did it did you have any training or anything like that.
