both brushes and technique, so basically find some you like or even just create your own, then get to practicing. Wont happen overnight, but keep up with practice n tutorials and you'll notice improvements.

People say its about the brushes, but some of the best banners are made using default brushes

SUre, brushes help, but skill is more important that brushes. Just experiment

I still don't see how you guys make these awesome looking backgrounds on your sigs! I've been to a lot of sites in the last few weeks that had tutorials such as goodtutorials.com and did a bunch of tutorials, but none of the backgrounds came close to the ones on some of your guys sigs...any ideas? :(

    BTW...i use Photoshop 7...

I use a mixture of brushes and Cinema 4D renders.
I like wolfpack brushes mostly. I'm getting into tech more, though.

    I use PS7 as well.

What I do is I brush in black on layer 1, then I make a new layer, get the lasso tool, fill a little area with a slightly dark colour and then do a colour dodge, and blend the area in.

Make alot of layers and brush a few spots on each layers with black and white. Then choose nice blending options and add a color balance or whatever..
