GR isn't really dead , it may not be what it used to be, but at least the website is still up ,so people can still register ! Social media has allot to do with it being slower, GR just needs to adjust.
Did you guys try running a shout box? I find that they really help tether a members interest in a site. Also... it's good to have active staff. I find that if the staff are active, then the members will usually follow suit. So having a good staff presence on the boards is a must have, imo. Ultimately though... I don't believe any community is truly dead until the owner flicks the switch & turns the boards off. So, it's just a dormant phase at the moment... My advice would be to try & remind your existing members that you're still here... & maybe drop a few plugs on dA or somthing. I do that, & i'm part of a very active community
I said it before I will say it again different direction simple. All good things eventually have to come to an end, GR is no different.
