i didn't say that you ought to invent a new style.
what i said is that right now the members of this forum are fixated on one style and can't seem to appreciate anything else.
tell me, from a non-photoshop point of view, which of the 2 sigs is more attractive?

honestly i think inverse's looks better. i aint fixated on 1 style, its just sigs like yours have been done so many times; not exactly the same but , they arent original anymore.

Every style imaginable has passed through these halls at some point or another. The truth of it is, you are still at the point where you are a beginner. You don't develop styles. You make exactly the same sigs as every other beginner. From experienced sigmakers eyes, they're all the same.

I know that you wont understand what I mean, but that's only because you're so new to sigmaking. And we see more people like you every couple of months. You lack the skills to make good sigs, so you also lack the skills to identify good sigs.

you say that you didn't like my sig because it lacks originality.
it seems you didn't preperly read what i said.
i specifically told you to look at it from a non photoshop point of view,
meaning whether or not it is unoriginal, you will give your unbiased opinion.

    and inverse, don't patronize me.
i am not new to sigmaking, i have been designing for a few years now.
i am sure that you are a very capable designer, but that doesn't show in this sig.
this sig reminds me of something i would have made at the beginning of my designing experience.
    ring any bells, inverse?
you yourself made a claim very similar to mine.
in that post you also said that your sig is "relatively advanced".
i agree that the idea was "relatively advanced", much more than my old school sig, but the execution of my sig surpasses yours immensely.

To be a little more clear in my decision... Neither sig was impressive in the least bit. The scale was based only in contrast (for you math freaks, that's called a curve)

I have 6 years of experience in design, both freelancing and working with various agencies throught out high school and college. I have an accelerated master of (science??) not sure why the school calls it that... and currently am getting paid quite a sum for my eyes at a major corporation.

I have credentials to make an effective critique. In the professional world, you're design is only worth a dollar amount. Sigs are worth $0... so I don't expect much out of them.

I appreciate the other opinions posted here, and I have considered them all. However, my decision still stands.

Just to note...I may have allowed Inverse to join the team had he reacted in a more professional manor. This contest was a test of more than design, and Inverse has failed.

Artifacts are random or missing data from an image. When an image is resized, photoshop replaces pixels in an image to expand it. It's gotten smarter over the years about the color of those pixels matching their surroundings, but it's not perfect yet. So those off color pixels appear as artifacts.

Another type of artifact is loss. When an image is compressed (saved as a jpg, png, or gif...and some other file types) Photoshop will remove pixels or replace pixels with either dither or white. Dithering is a pattern made to simulate a color using another color in the image. (image size is based on how many colors are in an image)

I'd be happy to explain the whole science, but you're probably already stopped reading....

Anywho... you're artifacts are actually a matte... something usually applied to GIF files around the edge of an image with a transparency.

To remove it... Photoshop>Layers>Matte>Remove White Matte

If it wasn't a gif, try defringing it in the same menu.

It's a little more advanced than that. It'll also have to do with your color profile, adjustment layers you used, and some you may have to add. But defringing the edge of the cut-out layer might help.

I'd suggest lowering opacity on adjustment layers, adjusting your curves, and exporting as optimized JPGs at 75% quality.
