Ok.. I've been working on this computer for to long. It had many terrible infections :censored: . Finally got rid of it, then the Windows Installer would not correctly work, I finally got that fixed. Now I have one last problem. I'm not sure if it was the spy/malware & virus' that screwed something up, but I cannot update anything.

    I'll explain a little more:
I'm connected straight to the internet through a NIC. The internet works just fine, I can surf the internet, I can download things, I can do anything online. I'm not using any proxy. But when I go into something like AVG and click update, it says no internet connection found. I looked at the AVG update settings, and its set to no proxy (as it should be in this case). I tried it with MalwareBytes, same thing, it says no connection. Tried it with Spy Ware Doctor, it says no connection. I can't do any auto updating and it's killing me. Anyone have any ideas? The internet works fine, just not the updating through programs.

Oh forgot to mention that I turned off the firewall, so that's not blocking the internet connection for the programs.

Oh, another problem that I just remembered. They have IE8 (boo) and I was going to update the Service Pack on the computer, but it won't let me. It has the active x popup bar on the top and when I click it, it only gives me the option to see info on the bar; no download option. I looked through Group policies, the registry, I looked in IE options (security and privacy) and no luck. Popup block is manually turned off (through regedit).

Help is appreciated.. I don't want to make someone mad by punching their baby..

Win XP is the OS with SP3.

I had alot of issues with AVG where it would not update . I would unistall it and download the newest version if you haven't already or just install something else like Avast. Did you install all the newest Windows upates yet or IE wont let you do that either? I agree IE=BOOOO

That's the thing, I can't do anything outside of IE. The only thing on the damn computer that gets internet is IE. I cant run windows update because the run active x option is not available, it only says show info about the bar. I can't do much it sucks. I can surf on IE though -_-

    If it's malware, run combofix.
Try running 'chkdsk /r' in recovery console

could just throw out the computer and get a new one lol, works for me heh.
nah i suggest Socks idea, back-up everything you need and back to fatory settings, then update and download one by one, cos if one is the problem at least you'll find it, or it'll run smoothly and everying A-OK.

takes too much effort to look in around you system trying to solve the problem, very time consuming

Just reinstall windows, easy, takes a short time and everything will work properly again.
