    i was wondering if you guys could help me out with some techniques for adding lighting to tags.

    Is it ok to just use the render>lighting effects filter in photoshop? or are there some better methods out there?

    Either brushing it in manually or using the dodge tool will work well. The render > lighting is utter and complete poopy, don't use it.

    Just use the burn + dodge tool, you'll get used to it.
