Oh god, that was the worst part of the scanline era:

People who started calling any sort of line a "scanline".

so what is the official definition of a scanline if neither example illustrated what one was...?

It seems that a scanline is a consitantly spaced horizontal, vertical, or diagonal pattern used in a work of art despite the fact that it may be cut or erased to fit in an area or shape....
If that's correct than those examples are indeed "scanlines" that are actually used well

the reason why people are speaking out against scanlines is because beginners often create a mediocre sig, add scanlines and think they're the next picaso when their original mediocre creation was superior to the abomination they created.

both of these two use scanlines. Guess which one overdid it.

most of the time scanlines do more harm than good, especially when you're first starting out. That said, I'm no expert, I'm about middle of the road as far as things are concerned and have a long way to go if I were to be considered a good graphics designer.

I don't see why people are arguing over this still.

It's simply a matter of opinion. That's it.

You can't just be taught most things in art, you need to experience it and evolve into your own designs. So asking for things like, 'how should I do my text' doesn't do anything. All tutorials will do for you is open up more doorways for different methods to use, it's up to you to do the final version and make it appealing.

Frankly, I suck at text. I admit it, and I just don't include it in any of my recent work.

The search button on the top of the site is obviously too hard to see or any non-retard would have used it, so instead you go to a more trivial means and show him how easy Google is to use.

Newflash: this site hasn't had any typography tutorials ever to my knowledge (and if they did I doubt they were worth two shits tbh, as theres literally maybe 5 people on this site I've known to be good at typography), and scan lines are not a tutorial depicted on GR either.

If he wanted a tutorial on how to do a sig from scratch or how to render something, then I'd have pointed him towards our tutorial section (where I'm pretty sure all the good render tutorials are also expired by now).

If you want to know why the site is inactive it's because the members of the community choose to do nothing about it and want everything handed to them on a platter. You only get out of a site what you put into it as a community member, and the community here rarely puts anything in and expects to get paid in gold. That should be common sense to anyone who has run a graphics community (or any community for that matter) like you have. This community is entirely selfish and thankless, those who used to contribute have grown tired of it and left and the people who remain are new people attempting to contribute without thanks, or selfish people who are solely here to take what they can and move on, just take a look around the site for yourself.
