I've already read The Greatest Show on Earth and The Blind Watchmaker, by Richard Dawkins, and I loved them. I finally got around to reading The God Delusion and I have to say I loved this one too. This book is for open-minded, and logical people, regardless of faith or culture. I'm not trying to start a debate on the existence of God, since believing in God in the first place is the result of being prepared to give blind faith to a cause regardless of proof or reason, so trying to suggest proof or reason to a fundamentalist Christian is an absolute waste of time.

In my mind, this book of logic and reasoning is more than enough to firmly put the fallacy of the existence of God finally to rest, unless you have an open mind you'll probably condemn this book before you experience it. 55% of the USA believe that the earth is less than 6,000 years old, and that we're all descendants of Adam and Eve. If you're one of them, this book would be your cryptonite.

    Anyone else here read this?

I don't believe in god either, but ..

Has the author explained how the world came to be? Was he there to witness it? Where the ------ did the first life forms come from? How was our planet made? Where did the water come from? How did we become individual people with a mind far greater than our ancestors?

    No?

    Then he hasn't proven ----.

Edit: However I might look for an e-book and check it out. The whole God exist VS Doesn't argument is BLEH though, yeah blind faith is BS, yeah the bible has more holes in it than a fruit loop, but there's still no scientific answers

There's plenty of sound theories on how the universe was created. Theories based on evidence, not on old scripts of dubious origin. It's very well understood among astronomers how planets come into creation. Water is 2 hydrogen atoms combined with 1 oxygen atom. The first life forms were amoeba. There are very distinct similarities between the DNA of amoeba and humans, just like there are very distinct similarities between humans and apes and jellyfish. Using DNA and molecular evidence, combined with fossil evidence scientists can very accurately estimate exactly when and how different species evolved. The fact we have brains very distinct from other animals is due to evolution. We developed frontal lobes which allowed us to simulate experiences in our head, and that is how we eventually evolved to have culture, art, music, deep emotions.

He doesn't need to prove what has already been proven. While we don't have 100% answers about the origins of the universe, we have 100% proof that the earth is NOT 6000 years old, and that creationism is NOT true. And, as Richard Dawkins argues, since when did a gap in information need filling with God? It should be filled with re-doubled efforts to fill those holes, just like scientists have been doing for the last few thousand years. The bible was written by man, and was not a cumulation of gods. To argue that these men, who many of which were not Christian or Jew, knew more about the universe than we know now is laughable.

Creationists cling to dead arguments and blind faith to overcome the hard truth of the universe. The true nature of our universe is far more beautiful and intriguing than anything ever described in holy manuals or scriptures.

Oh I completely agree. I don't think Noah took 2 of every Dinosaur onto his Ark.

However, I still believe that brushing the idea off completely is retarded. Who really knows if there is or isn't a higher force up there? No one.

I think your dislike of the idea of GOD is more a complete dislike of the CHURCH =)

They're the people that believe/enforce the retarded stories from a book and put stupid twists on it, expect you to dedicate yourself blindly, pay them money, rah rah rah..etc.etc.

I don't think God left us alone for this long for us to end up dedicating ourself to him/it/them

Science teaches us that you must prove something to be true, for it to exist. Religion teaches us that we must seek no evidence, and believe blindly.

Saying that no one can disprove God is like saying no one can disprove the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. However, any reasonable person would straight away so it's impossible for there to be a Flying Spaghetti Monster. The only reason people believe in God is because they were raised to believe in God. They were told that if they didn't believe, they would burn in hell for all eternity.

In essence, God is the Church. The Catholic Church has long been a bastion of control. It has manipulated kings, emperors, and it's followers. It takes in billions every year, and pays no taxes.

Christians don't seem to realize that they only reason their religion differs from that of Muslims, Jews, or Hindus, is that they were raised in a Christian home. If they were born in India, they'd be Hindu. If they were born in Pakistan, they'd be Muslim.

For me, the biggest difference between Atheist beliefs and Religious beliefs is that only Christians promise people of other faith that they'll burn in the fiery pits of hell, in agony and turmoil, for all eternity.

I'm just waiting for your typical 13 year old American Christian kid to stumble across this thread and inform us how wrong we are, and how what he learned in Sunday School is true. Most Christians have absolutely no idea of the history or origins of their religions.

As I said, I agree. The Church is complete bull----, the ---- they teach is bull----. That's the church. I could join you for hours on how much I dislike what the church (and other religions) teach.

Personally I think looking at everything scientifically and if something happens you can't explain, you just brush it off, is a very dim view.

Just as I think going completely on blind faith, and following what everyone else says without making up your own ideas about it or raising your kids to not ask questions and purely believe in what you do.. is also ------ing retarded

I like to mix it up, a bit of blind belief (not in what religions teach, but of my own ideologies) and science. As yes, I don't believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but I'm not going to dismiss the idea that something else put a hand in our making or oversees our evolution and tries to steer us in the right path. (Personal view there)

I'm not suggesting we ignore gaps in theories, or brush them off. I'm just saying we shouldn't be making sh!t up to put in there.

What is logic and reason anyway? Why is a so-called "blind faith" any less logical than some "evidence" that some guy finds and makes everyone believe. You can find dinosaur bones and "prove" that it's millions of years old...but how do we know that the method of proving it is actually correct? In essence, you cannot prove or disprove one theory or another. No matter what you say, you cannot disprove in a higher being or deity. Sure, you will come out with all your evidence but there is no way to prove the evidence is truth. Who decides what is truth and what isn't? A scientist 200 years ago says this is the way to determine how old something is so 200 years later another scientist finds something, tests it using the other scientists method to prove it came from a period two million years ago. But what happens if the first scientist was wrong with his method? Unless he actually was around when the object he found was, he has no irrefutable proof that it came from the time he says it does. Science cannot prove anything 100% because lets be honest, someone had to invent science. Someone told everyone this is how things work and you must go off my word and rules. That doesn't make it true. Yes, that doesn't mean that God made the world either, I'm not trying to prove He made the world, I'm just proving to you that not one thing in this Universe can prove how the Earth, and we as living creatures, were formed.

MP. Reaching new standards of stupid every day.

To summarize every point I could possibly make in rebuttal to what you said, science is in the method, not the answer. Which is the major difference between it and religious theology. And the fact one cannot disprove something does not make it true.

If I am so stupid, prove to me that one point you make is true. Go on. I guarantee you can't.
