I watched a documentary on it and a big part of it is hereditary. Just like AIDS you can only prolong it through medication but death is inevitable from it.
You say that now but if, and that's a giant if judging by your character, you have a wife, kids and grand kids you would most likely do whatever it takes for another day on earth.

This is old news anyway. Also, Alzheimer's (or one of the causes) is caused by a deficiency in Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the synapse of the frontal lobe of the brain. What we see is a reduction in its production, which reduces their ability to "remember" things. However, they have noticed that those who do "brain exercises" are less likely to gain the dementia.
