A clinic in Russia is one of the few places in the world offering one of the most extreme forms of cosmetic surgery - leg lengthening.

Doctors say they try to convince patients not to undergo the operation

Struggling on crutches down her hospital ward hallway, 23-year-old Tanya looks as though she's been in a horrific car crash.

Multiple pins protrude from each leg, supporting the brace in which they sit.

But she has chosen to be in this condition - in her quest for longer legs. She's also chosen to remain anonymous.

She tells me: "This process really sucks you in. When you see your legs grow longer you want more and more.

"It makes you want to make your upper legs longer as well and grow the full 10cm. That would look really beautiful."

The process has cost her the equivalent of £16,000 and nine months of her life.

Watching the procedure isn't easy. It involves metal pins being inserted into the legs.

The procedure can take nine months to complete

They act as scaffolding when the bones are broken and gradually moved apart. Over time the gap heals lengthening the bone.

Seeing perfectly healthy legs being forcibly broken brings into question the ethics of this operation.

Orthopaedic surgeon Konstantin Novikov operates on those who have a genuine need and on those with cosmetic goals.

"You know with this operation we try and convince them not to do it. But they are determined with their dreams and it's impossible to change their mind."

In the UK cosmetic use is banned.

John Hollingdale is an orthopaedic surgeon at the Central Middlesex Hospital in London.

He said: "Nothing surprises me these days that's being done by surgeons around the world. I'm not sure why they're doing it in Kurgan - maybe they're running low on funds."

In Russia it's just another aspect of the ongoing quest for physical perfection.

Dr Novikov tells me: "If it's possible to change the form of the nose, increase the size of breasts, why not change forms of legs?"

By turning the screws in her leg braces Nadia's broken bones are moved a further millimetre apart each day.

She says the pain is worth it if she can achieve her goal of an extra 5cm in height.

They don't have to be long, but legs are a very sexy part of a female body. More so than those mounds on their chests in my opinion.

The face is pretty important, too.

But I just don't see what makes LONG legs attractive.

Edit: Long legs usually ends up being spindly, gross, chicken, spaghetti legs. NO THANKS. I LIKE A GIRL WHO LOOKS LIKE SHE CAN ACTUALLY STAND.

I've yet to see legs that look like spaghetti.... The legs lead upwards to the dark places... like a female treasure path.

Yeah, I have to agree with that, those are nice.

BUT THOSE ARE RARE.

Also, I'd like to see what those things look like without the heels.

And I still don't really care about the length itself at all.

Usually girls with long legs have these disgusting sticks that can't bend past 90 degrees.
