I'm not reading the whole thread but if you make a site revealing magic tricks you are not a magician your a heckler that ruins shows, have you not ever heard of a magiciain does not reveal his secrets? there is a point to that , I am a ----- magician and i think this exposer is terrible =*(, when i opened the thread I thought i was going to get to talk with a fellow magician.

    Oof?
    Really.
So where did you learn your tricks?

Did you make them all up yourself?

No, exactly. If people don't SHARE knowledge then it dies, it fades out of use. This whole concept of "secret" magic is ------ing ridiculous, if no one ever shared their secrets then barely anyone would be able to do "magic" and it'd have died out by now, save for the occassional new tricks invented. Sharing, and the passage of knowledge develops something not inhibits it.

    ------ing magicians.

Excuse me, I have something to say. So sit down, shut up and listen (read).

Exposure is when a magician shares how they do a trick to people who only want to know *how* they do the trick, not because they want to *learn* how to do the trick.

Magicians will share the secrets (not all the time and not all tricks, it all depends on the magician) if people want to learn how to do them and perform the tricks themselves, that's how they get into magic.

A magician hates people who expose because they purely show people who have no intent of learning the trick, how to do it. These people know how the trick is done, thus taking away the "magic" from the trick. The more people that know, the harder it is to fool someone.

That being said, yes there are people who ask to be taught and eventually give up but they are the only ones that know the secret whereas if it where exposed; say on Youtube, then a load of people know how it is done.

    Understand?

No, because it's a crap idea.
And it's, so limited, if a magician merely exposed himself to those that make it clear they want to learn, the whole thing becomes some bizarre aprentice scenario. Where do you think a lot of people currently doing magic got their first inspiration from? From people such as the Masked Magician, who showed his tricks, yet they still retained the "magic". I don't believe showing the world at large how a trick is done is a necessarily negative thing, not only is the exposure very VERY minimal in the first place (to the extent that, well who's going to go on the site if they're not interested).

It's like, near enough everyone is going to dabble in some magic trick of some form in their life, near enough every single person on the planet, at least in the western cultures. Likewise with lets say...DIY, the vast VAST majority of people will dabble in it at some point, they may not be completely interested, they may not take it as a proffession, but they should be able to see how it's done. I mean, how do you know you want to do something (seriously) if you have no idea what actually goes on to create it.

I'm sure this is making no sense, but it is 5:55am and I have not slept.

I still disagree with the hating of the open-ness, the fact that magic is smoke and mirrors regardless means that this seemingly 'purist' attitude is unjustified. Why protect the magic like some close guarded secret, people enjpy knowing how they were tricked, otherwise people such as the masked magician wouldnt have been nearly so popular. It's not as if it ruins it for future generations of potential magicians, if anything the over-steralization of tricks prompts new tricks to be created in order to avoid becoming stale. If, how a trick was done was never exposed to the public, then why would magicians ever need to make new ones? there wouldn't be the same need.

    AND
    And.
How many bloody people go on a magic website just to "see how it is done". I'm betting a tiny proportion compared to those who want to actually do a trick themselves, even if it's just the one.

    Yeaaah.
