Blessthefall http://www.myspace.com/blessthefall Christian Hardcore, but still. Hardcore. On that list, a lot of what I would call deathmetal. All the deep/high pitched screaming with extremely fast drum beats. But meh, it fits.
That it was, but if you were to talk to Guy Picciotto about it, he would most certainly disagree. Emo is one of those terms which describes the context of the music, rather than a genre that can define a style. It's very much Hardcore (which is where the term is coined, Emo = Emotional Hardcore), however the sheer differences between the style of RoS/Fugazi etc, and the rest of the hardcore scene, is what seperated Emo from Hardcore. Deep lyrics, high contrast dynamics, and emotional stage performances where almost unheard of in the scene prior to the early nineties. We have plenty of bands which use the same formula now, but are classified much differently, due to the saturation of alternative 'core on the scene. We have, I suppose, third wave Emo being released now (RoS being first wave, Fugazi being second wave), with bands like Straylight Run, Sunny Day Real Estate, Brand New, etc, but they don't really follow the old Punk/Hardcore style that RoS, Fugazi, etc had.
Good point. When Rites of Spring was singing about personal feelings, other Punk bands of the time were singing rebellion music. Hence why they were so different.
Just look at how the bands are called, it's ridiculous. but anyways, if that kinda music cheers you up..? Good luck with it.
These threads don't work because people know nothing about genre's. Rites of Spring yes a great band, but they are named so often by genre whores, "they are one of the first emo or "Emotive hardcore punk" bands" this is total BS they essentially were up in a scene where emo spawned, they influenced many emo bands but are not an emo band in itself. I used to be heavily into my hardcore, but the genre is stagnant and dying. This is why I tend to skip through genres currently massing in Math rock, Freeform jazz, Post-punk, Prog-rock/punk, No Wave, New Wave, Indie and avant garde. Extend your horizons the tools are there find more than one genre to listen too because to me this is what i call a "Elitist music cretin"
I didn't mention you or genres. But now that you mention it, you are pretty horrible at differentiating anything. Also, starting a label doesn't mean anything in terms of understanding genres. Please don't make me quote your stupidity from other threads.
They happen to be one of my favorite bands, their lyrics are emotive, this does not make them an Emo band, you obviously fail to recognise with the genre.
*sigh* I wonder why the genre "Emo" was called just that? I bet it was the EMOTIONAL LYRICS never seen before in Hardcore. Funny how things work like that.
Rites of spring, Fugazi and rival schools (RS being post-hardcore), all name drop bands for people that believe they know where Emo started, and refer to it as Emo when they are Emotive hardcore punk which in today's margins is competently different from the Emo genre of today perhaps best being said a sub genre, usually demonstrated by whiny American vocals, generic rhythms Emo being the evolutions and fargone crappyness that encapsulates the genre, i take it you read and belive everything that wikipedia tells you right? RoS are essentially a hardcore-punk band.
