a friend of mine is a website designer, you may not think it - but advertising in the local newspaper is bringing him in a ---- load of buisness. Give that a try, it should be free for a small advert and relatively cheap for a large one.

Well, are you looking for sites which you join where people hire you for graphic design work, and the website's free to join? I don't think such a thing exists beyond things like 99designs, which is crowdsourcing.

Check out behance.net, it's invite only so you'll have to apply for an invitation, or find someone who already has one. But it's a free portfolio site, which means you can upload samples of your work. I get quite a bit of work via my behance profile.

Best bet is to upload a LFW resume on craigslist, take a look through requests on craigslist or find companies hiring and submit your portfolio (you will almost *never* find a company hiring a fulltime web designer, generally its a few weeks worth of work and then they let you go once they have their design).

The best form of business when it comes to freelance is to get your name out, and word of mouth is an extremely strong tool. At this point my business tends to just come to me, but this is after 2-3 years of me searching out people who needed designs and submitting portfolios and doing the whole application thing.

Another great thing for a freelance designer is to open yoru own site similar to extremepixels / transversestyles and just get your designs coded and online, brings in a lot of profits if you can pull in the traffic.

There are quite a few places like 99designs you can go to as well, but I don't remember their URLs.

I can say as a struggling freelance webdesigner/student that its pretty hard. Best thing you can do is let people know who you are. Also, I get more local work than just online. I know a lot of people in small businesses who would love to branch out online. It's all about letting people know who you are and what you can do...so i also suggest either using that behance website, or just creating one of your own, show your stuff, and also incluide a list of your workings.

It's trial and error, you just have to have patience.

As stated above, local paper and Craigslist are both great places to find people looking for part time, freelance designers.

The best bit about local jobs is you can charge a lot more than online clients, as the people tend to be willing to forget about paying rock bottom prices if they can personally meet you and interact with you in person during the process. Heaps of my work comes from going around local businesses offering them free quotes for websites/expansion/logo redesigns/sign design/flyers/pamphlets/posters/TV ads/anything they could ever need. People always say yes to free quotes, and when they realise just what they can get for a relatively low amount of money, they often take up your services.
