I think of your recent work this is your best, its appealing to look at, well blended and nice text, apart from your name on it, try adding a bit more depth by sharpening a few of the white spots and add some nice minimalistic colored effects to accentuate the sig.

yer, i usually just smudge the bg, then blur it, then add effects on top... as well as other effects / maps etc etc etc.

Is that a good way of doing it?

backgrounds can be anything really imo xD
you can try using stocks to serve as backgrounds (like a city or something)
It doesn't always have to be flashy oober smudged effect background.
I try to have my effects emerge from the render/ focal point and not have it scattered all over the place, unless
said effect is like little mini glowing dots or something to that effect.
Of course, that isn't the only way to do it, but that's just my two cents.

    I like the sig though,
good flow, lighting, text, and i think the border goes well with it ;]
    keep it up man :)

Thanks guy's, im glad im going in the right direction, maybe i just need to take more time to do a sig...

In all honesty i want to be able to create sigs like 'Draven' and few other members ive seen here (to many to mention, lol), but, mine just all seem really bad (lQ) next to some of the sigs you guy's create..

The thing i do is a look at all the great sigs even some of the good sigs and take ideas from them and combine into my own. Maybe this can help you.

    loosing your mojo?
not at all man, I love what you did with it looks good

About your BG question, I have read alot of tuts and some suggestions I've read are to start from the ground up, without any stock images and just start with a solid BG color and blend in with some gradients and then start with fractals or c4d's and then of course your render or renders.
    Hope it helps
