One day I'm going to win a battle. The main problem is, the vast majority of the people on this forum wouldn't recognize a good tag if it slapped them in the face.
I've lost to people who have submitted tags that aren't anywhere near as good as mine, but 90% of the votes are from beginners, who just pick the one with the flashiest effects, and ignore my more minimalistic style. I lost a battle to WolfGang five to nothing, even though the tag he submitted wasn't particularly good. However, tons of people don't like me, because I'm a narcissistic ass-hole, and no noob is going to vote against a guy who has a purple name and a fancy User-bar. That is actually one reason why I like ranking. Regardless of whatever bias or inconsistencies there may be in it, someone who's ranked s.emi, is not going to be a beginner. The main reason that the good designers on this site barely ever post tags for C&C is the fact they're gonna get comments from a whole bunch of beginners who don't know what composition is, doesn't know what monotone means, and thinks flow has something to do with running water... Also, we have people like Mantis and w/e (who I have never liked, and hasn't liked me since me and Broken went on a holy crusade against his bullsh!t) who likes to pretend he's one of the big boys, but is out of his depth the moment his skills of pasting a render on a background and doing a colour balance layer don't suffice. In all honesty, were there rankings, I would say I'd probably be rated int.ermediate to maybe low s.emi, and any battles I were doing would be voted on by people who actually appreciate when I'm trying to do something complex, rather than smudging the f*ck out of an unsized render and pasting the resized render on top. I don't use C4Ds, because I suck at making them, and I don't like using other peoples C4Ds in my work. /end rant
Sorry that the majority of the members are less intelligent than some of us :/ (no sarcasm here, I really am =_= ) Show us your good stuff, throw your vibrant flashy stuff to them to make them smile and feel all warm in their pants I saw your tag today and I was in awe tbh.
Lol my main forte is realism tbh, you know this, I know this. I'm still learning though, and never once claimed to be anything better than mediocre. I can sympathise with you though, as every single time I've put a ----load of time and effort into something, it never seems as though there is any comments other than 'CHANGE TEXT NAO!' from anyone who bothers to reply to the topic. Still, its nice getting feedback and improving, but it does suck when you feel under-appreciated for something that takes hours, looks great, and you get told 'Meh'. Me, I blame the parents.
'tis why I only post here in BC...you basically summed it all up Then again, no matter what field of art you are in people will have bias opinions. For example, I despise abstract artists who splatter a couple splotches of paint on a canvas or take a photograph of a lawn chair in black and white and call it "artistic" and "meaningful" and if you look hard enough there is "symbolism". The whole reason this works is because the clientele is stupid...completely and utterly stupid. I lean more towards art that takes actual skill, I don't care if there's a damn reason you painted a guy crying, all I care about is that it's a beautiful piece of artwork that SHOWS your skill in said chosen medium. Anyways back to what you were saying...people are stupid and will vote for something they think looks cool or has their favorite video game character on it. Although I've never actually liked the fact of "battling" artwork of any kind against each other because are usually completely different and both great in their own ways, it's hard to pick "the best" /end rant someone else bitch about something
It makes me worry that most threads involving my name in the title end up having at least one person's rant :/
Who were you battling, though? So far I've only challenged people I've considered to be at the same level or greater. I don't want to go round challenging noobs just to get some wins, but I can't help but feel that most of the people voting don't know enough about design and GFX to vote based on which tag is actually better.
In all honesty right, I usually only ever vote based on what I feel looks better and grabs my attention more. Looking at the flow, composition, text, effects, style etc doesn't really make me want to vote at all. I know I'm probably the exception to the crew here, but like I said, I just vote for whatever looks best. Well, unless its a simple stock with a few filters added.. Its usually pretty obvious who has spent the most time working on a tag and putting the effort in. And if it isn't obvious to anyone voting, it simply means that the tag didn't do the job it was intended for.. I dunno, there's my input. Flame me if ya want EDIT: Just to clarify, when C&Cing something, I do tend to look at the more specific parts that I mentioned above, but when voting in a competition I feel I shouldn't have to base my vote on the mechanics of how the tag is made and should simply vote on which tag I prefer.
